The Digital Age

Today, it was unfortunately brought to my attention that the interwebz that I love so much must have a detrimental impact on this planet that I love so much more. All its data-facebook albums, notes & videos; free emails; wikipedia; even this blog, to which I add more and more data each day- needs to be stored somewhere. And no matter how small the chips get, they still require energy to be made, maintained, and disposed of. Sigh, I'm a horrible person.

I was also reminded of my shameful generation which cares nothing of current events. Why? I don't know, internet maybe? Blogs, zines and snippets of facts that can be read quickly between twitter posts (which I take no part in, mind you) and facebook status updates, so as not to take up too much time of our important day. In high school, I hated the social science classes. And being so caught up in the drama of being an anguishing teenager that I never thought politics concerned me. And not to speak for the whole of my generation, but I believe the same was true for a good bit of my peers. Even today, most people concern themselves more with what's happening on their favorite celebrity twitter page then what's going on in the world. As for Americans in general, we are so geocentric in the sense that we believe America to be the center of everything. You know, maybe the internet's not to blame. Well, maybe for the downfall of printed newspapers and journals, but at least not for our lack of interest in current events. Our own country's to blame. We've become accustomed to being the center of it all, true or not, that we forget about everything else.

The digital age ain't all that it's cracked up to be. updated drawing
